Architect Julien Beller illuminates his atypical approach to urban design: calling into question how a city is built, he works toward building a just city, constructed with pleasure, where everyone has a place. He received a Ph.D. in Architecture in 1979 from UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design. As today’s most pressing challenges cut across disciplinary boundaries, this series examines the role of the designer in articulating new methods connecting the conceptual knowledge for asking why with technical skills for asking how. Lecture by Charles Renfro, partner at Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the New York–based interdisciplinary design studio that designed the new BAMPFA. A talk by Refik Anadol, an Istanbul-born media artist, director, and pioneer in the aesthetics of machine intelligence. Cocurator of the US Pavilion at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, Mimi Zeiger offers insight into the curatorial practices and research behind that project as well as the upcoming exhibition Soft Schindler. The Lecture Series codirectors are Miguel A. Mendez from the von Karman Institute (Belgium), Alessandro Parente from the Université libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), Andrea Ianiro from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain), Bernd R. Noack from Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen and TU Berlin (GERMANY) and Steven L. Brunton from University of Washington (USA). To date Gitai has created over 90 works of art over 38 years. Berkeley Arts + Design features, fortifies, and mobilizes existing excellence in the arts and design at Berkeley, while fostering dynamic collaboration, innovation, and public access across all arts and design fields, on campus and in public life. His recent feature film, Rabin, The Last Day, was presented at the 72nd Venice Film Festival.

Christine Gaspar discusses her work as executive director of the Center for Urban Pedagogy, a New York–based nonprofit whose mission is to use the power of design and art to increase meaningful civic engagement. How will designers and their collaborators work together to address issues of climate and sustainability? Renfro will present the design of BAMPFA in the context of several other DS + R projects that challenge our standards of perception in often surreal ways, including Blur Building, The High Line in New York, Museum of Image and Sound in Rio de Janeiro, and Moscow’s Zaryadye Park. His work has been presented in several major retrospectives at the Pompidou Center Paris, the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Lincoln Center New York and the British Film Institute London. Between 1989 and 2015 ten of his films were entered in the Cannes Film Festival for the Palme d'Or as well as the Venice Film Festival for the Golden Lion award.
