Its final sequence, in which a suspicious Lalo strolls into Kim and Jimmy’s apartment with a gun in his jeans and instructs Jimmy to repeat his story of walking through the desert, then to repeat it again, and again, and again, is almost unbearably taut. He asks Mike how long it'll take for him to feel normal again, but he also feels like maybe he doesn't deserve to feel normal, after he helped Lalo to literally get away with murder and flee the country. By accepting a bag of cash in exchange for serving as Lalo’s mule, and by mentioning this mission to Kim, he has cast his lot with the Mexican cartel in a way that can’t be uncast. He wants to hear Jimmy's story about how his car broke down and he walked through the desert all night, over and over again. The penultimate episode of Better Call Saul season 5 sees Kim make the still-surprising choice to leave the firm behind, instead opting to focus on her pro-bono clients. Jimmy appears to be pushing toward something he doesn’t understand, stretching himself like the show can stretch a thriller sequence, until he grows thin, almost transparent, with the strain of trying to get away from himself. The only issue is, Mike asks Saul to come up with a story; Saul drops off the cash for Lalo’s bail and he tells Lalo that his car broke down and had no signal; to make it less risky, he did not hitchhike, he walked north. Everything and everyone exists in a permanent state of stalemate, pressing for the tiniest advantage under constant threat of mutual destruction. With Kim going pro-bono, it might be that the tequila bottle ultimately represents the kinds of tricks she'll have to pull to succeed (something she's already done with one client, using Jimmy's help, in season 5).
