With tremendous effort, all of them made it to Elephant Island. He set out with 27 other adventurous young men (mostly from the UK) in a modest ship bound for the icy world of Antarctica. Really fun and enjoyable, if exploration in the Golden Age is your thing.
And seeing pictures and film taken during the time they were frozen in the pack ice, and part of their journey out adds to the authenticity of the film. Shackleton was my hero growing up and the reason I went down to Antarctica 5 times (including once in a topsail schooner) and lived on the Falkland Islands for 6 years. Most of all, it is a salute to Shackleton himself, whose calm and grace under extreme pressure helped guarantee that not a single crew member would be lost. But on the other hand... he realized if the one goal had disappeared, we'll have another one, and so, if I can't cross the continent, I'm going to bring all my men back ... 31 October 2018
